Bigamy

A married person, while his or her spouse is alive and they are not divorced, commits bigamy by marrying another person. The crime of bigamy may be committed knowingly or unknowingly. Many states do not use bigamy laws to charge the "innocent" or unknowing bigamist if that person reasonably believed their spouse was unmarried, divorced or widowed.
