Buying on the Internet

Internet "shopping" is amazingly easy and convenient. There is no more convenient way to shop than to sit at your computer, browse various stores and make a purchase with a click of your mouse. Of course, you have to wait for delivery, but typically, that is more than offset by the convenience and potential savings (lower prices, free shipping, no sales tax).

TIP: The FTC has more information on online shopping at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt191.shtm. A number of online articles that offer a wide variety of information are published on the site.

All major retailers have Web sites that allow consumers to make purchases. Buying from these stores is typically very secure and has the added attraction of local in-store returns.

Many purely online retailers are also trustworthy. To make sure you are shopping securely, always read the privacy statement and look for the lock icon on your browser's toolbar when you check out.

For added security, pay with a credit card only. You will be protected if overcharges or unauthorized charges appear on your credit card statement. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, consumers are only liable for the first $50 in disputed charges.

Before you decide to purchase, or e-shop, from a particular online store:

How do I know that the information I give to an online store will not be given out to other online venders?

Check the store's privacy policy statement. If one is not posted, you may start receiving unwanted e-mails from other online retailers. Always read the store's privacy policy and do not do business with that retailer if you do not agree with its provisions.

I am afraid to use my credit card to buy something over the Internet. Is it safe?

Yes, if you are purchasing on a secure sight (look for the lock icon at the bottom of your toolbar). Additionally, your credit card liability is limited to $50 by law for any unauthorized purchases.

TIP: Most companies give customers the option to call and speak directly to a company representative to make the purchase or mail a check or money order.

Can I dispute an online purchase with my credit card company?

Yes. Consumers have 60 days after a purchase to dispute the charge through the credit card company.

How do I determine if I am getting the best price?

Smart Internet buyers always comparison shop. There are many Web sites that list the different prices of an item at various stores. Some popular sites for comparing prices include:

How do I file a complaint against an online store?

You may file a complaint with the FTC by accessing its Web site at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt191.shtm and clicking on the complaint form button.
