Regulations

Regulations are typically enacted by federal and state agencies to provide specific direction for broader laws. Administrative agencies are authorized by Congress to adopt such rules.

EXAMPLE: Federal law provides that disabled children receive the same education as nondisabled children. Because this is a broad mandate, regulations created by the U.S. Department of Education guide educators in this process. For example, a regulation may provide that children with disabilities must be tested within a certain amount of time after enrollment in a school. The statute itself does not go into such detail.
