State and Local Taxes
Aside from federal income taxes, there are a variety of state and local taxes that individuals must pay. All states have the right to impose taxes on their residents, including a state income tax.
State taxes go to pay for public services such as public schools, police protection, health and welfare benefits, and the operation of the state government.
